New York City > New York > United States
By far the jewel of New York City surely isn't a grand landmark like the Statue of Liberty or a technical masterpiece like the subway. It's Central Park. Here the active segment of the city teems with a rich array of activities. Wide open fields edged with a maze of walkways, bridges, shady trees and lakes. Sidewalk vendors, runners and roller-bladers, artists and musicians, and tourists like us mill about. All of this verdant extravangance nestled amidst an army of skyscrapers which stand in rigid formation for miles around.
Central Park is certainly amongst the most expensive parks in the world, valued in 2005 at just shy of $529 billion dollars. Annually the CP Conservancy spends about $25 million dollars spread out over 843 acres and the numerous utilities which sustain the landscape. Of course, such a wealthy city as New York can easily afford and appreciate such a magnificent burden if it can thrive amidst land prices exceeding $1,130 per square foot in recent years.
Central park is the natural antidote to the culmination of civilization which is New York City. It’s a breath of fresh air and sanity amidst the smog, noise and clutter.
