Schnebly Hill Road to Sedona

Sedona > Arizona > United States

When I saw this curvy 13-mile connector road on the map between the 17 freeway and Sedona it didn't look particularly malicious. It wasn't until we were bucking around on a rocky road that could have been ravaged by tornadoes, that I realized this was Schnebly Hill Road and that we had come this way before. This road should only be driven in a vehicle with four-wheel drive, some beater-car, or a rent-a-car, which is what we had last time. We had bought insurance so we didn't care. This time we were in our own vehicle, so we crawled cautiously down the ruined road.

Incidentally, Schnebly Hill Road is named after Sedona Miller Schnebly, source of the town's name and wife of its first postmaster.

Cowpie Rock

Schnebly Hill Road is also an access road for Cowpie Rock and local environs closer to Sedona which offer splendid hikes and climbing amongst the red rocks. If you look closely at the high-resolution image of Cowpie Rock you can see a group of people walking around, giving reference to the immensity of its surface area.

On the way down Schnebly Hill Road we saw countless jeeps from Red Rock Tours and Pink Jeep Tours and so forth. One company even had this huge, fat-tired truck with giant shocks that looked like a dune buggy with multi-level seating. Essentially a vehicle made specifically for this road.

Other Formations

Within a couple miles of Sedona we came upon this rather scenic range of rocks that looked like a fortress or something. I've looked around but I cannot find its name.

Cowpie Rock is a vast, smooth, rock formation kind of like a big playground for hikers and climbers. As its name implies, it resembles a gigantic cowpie baking in the sun.
