I happened upon Green Valley Lake by accident while seeking out a camping ground in the area. It was a welcome breath of country air from the built-up Lake Arrowhead just to the west.

The forest area was a tad on the boring side but the namesake Hodgdon Meadow is a short walk away. This campground has the distinction of being open all year while the choice locations are only open during Summer.

This huge hermit crab was trekking along this low wall near the visitor’s center at Isla Contoy, a bird sanctuary island off the Yucatan Coast and a few hours north by boat from Isla Mujeres. He was remarkably similar to the hermit crabs that invaded our campsite at night on St John in the Virgin Islands. They’re about as big as a fist, and solid as stone.

On each side of the long dune are lakes and marshy areas. This trail was very steep on each end and formed a narrow isthmus through a scenic marsh. I had to be very careful not to slide off into the water.

Actually, this huy was landing after a high jump and his rear paddle tires kicked up some rooster tails, which are normally the results of spinning out the rear tire from a stationery position. In this case the result was the same.

This iguana lives in a tree in a house across from my sister’s casa in Sayulita. The owner of the house, a pleasant Mexican gentleman, explained in Spanish that every day the lizard saddles along the wall from the tree to this decorative courtyard gateway and peers out this little window.

Shasta Lake is famous for boating and waterskiiing recreation. Houseboats are nestled here and there, and many boat ramps are available around the lake. As you can see the water level is quite low, probably due to the drought this year, increasing the need for irrigation water from this large reservoir.

At the end of a day of motorcycling the curvy Gilman Road from Ellery Creek Campground over to Shasta Dam and back. The best part is that for many many miles I saw not even a single vehicle in either direction. I had the countryside to myself!

Site #12 at Ellery Creek Campground had the best view of both the lush surrounding forest and the broad panorama of the McCloud River and valley. It was also nice and shady, yet allowed some sun in for the solar panel.

Although there were many nice campgrounds along Gilman Road, Hirz Bay was adjacent to a boat ramp for launching boats into Shasta Lake. Hirz Bay campground was also well maintained and quite spacious. Unfortunately it is difficult to capture an entire campground with one lame photo.

Each day a short jaunt down the river from my camp site was rewarded with a crystal-clear and refreshing swim in the McCloud River. Sometimes I bathed, sometimes dived into the rapids from the rocks, and one time even gave the dog a bath in the cool water.

This is the thing which created the reservoir called Shasta Lake. Before they put this thing in here there was a town called Kennett and lots of land occupied by the Winnemem Wintu indians. Shasta Dam generates a big wad of electricity for millions of people, helps irrigate vast tracts of land and provides flood control for the Sacramento River.

The Smith River Falls plunges a spectacular three feet. All along the road the river spreads into swimmable pools. This area is a great spot for a family picnic. Nearby are excellent campgrounds.

Situated next to the Smith River and within the lush green forest, this campground has a half-dozen lovely (and free) sites.

A couple of warning signs spelled out a release of liability for trespassers on this sketchy bridge. Despite the condition of the planks, the structure of the bridghe is quite solid.
