Boat Trip & Hike up Wailua Valley
Kauai > Hawaii > United States
We rented a motorboat and buzzed up the Wailua River. Along the way we passed a group of kayakers. In hindsight (as they soon were) kayaking would have been a better choice. Lower Wailua River is a very peaceful river that should be navigated in a sleek, silent vessel.

In a shallow area we beached the boat and took to the trail. After a pleasant trek through the jungle we arrived in a bowl formed by Secret Falls. The water was cool and refreshing, as Hawaiian mountain water tends to be. We lounged around and bathed under the waterfall. Aaaaah...
Natural Jacuzzi
Instead of taking the trail back, we rock-hopped downstream and found a place where the stream water hit a corner and frothed into a bubbly round tub. It was easy to imagine the ancient Hawaiians enjoying the day in this very same spot. Near this natual Jacuzzi was a cleared area next to the river, like a community gathering place. Down the river we came upon the boat again.
Strutting Peacocks
On the way back we docked at the Hawaiian Village on the banks of the Wailua River. The grounds are neatly tended and occupied by radiant peafowls. Coming through the trees, we spotted one male peacock with his shocking feathers sprayed out, slowing strutting around within a group. Occasionaly he would vibrate his quills, sounding like a rattlesnake.
