Hiking the Acropolis in Athens
In the afternoon we hiked up to the Acropolis and milled around in the heat. The stately temples baked serenely in the relentless sun. In two and a half millennia they have survived much weather, war, devastation, and daily swarms of tourists, aging better than the 60s-style architecture of modern Athens. But then, the Parthenon is the archetype for many buildings around the world simply for its timeless elegance.
Tooling Around Greece
Athens was nice, but the islands of Greece are far more spectacular and interesting. After spending a few days on Corfu and enjoying its crystal-clear blue water, it was impossible to find a beach near Athens which could compare. After jumping across the sea to Crete, we spent a few days at a beachside resort with only moderately better conditions. Still, we pined for Corfu or another of the blissful blue-water islands in the Greek archipelago. On the next trip we’ll have to indulge in a diving adventure on an island like Mykonos.
