Sandwiched between that helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier and a whale watching expedition was this brief ascent to a scenic overview of Juneau courtesy of the Mount Roberts Tramway.
Located right at the cruise ship docks the Tramway hooks nearly a quarter-million tourists a year with its offer of instant gratification.

A Gentle AscentView All Sizes
Within six minutes a body is lifted over 3,800 feet to a panoramic view of the city, Gastineau Channel and Douglas Island. Located inside the visitor's center at the summit of Mount Roberts is a restaurant, gift shop, access to trails, and some other attractions.
While out at Mendenhall Glacier the other family members — my dad, grandma, sister and her two kids — were on adventures of their own. So it was actually a remarkable coincidence that they were already up at the summit station in that narrow space of time. After hanging out for a few I grabbed a bite to eat to go and scrambled for the next tram car back to sea level.

Tramway Car Ascent
Check the Mount Roberts Tramway website for up-to-date information. As of this writing the fare is $27 for adults, half of that for kids age 6 - 12, and free for children under 6. Perhaps a tad pricey for a round trip of 12 minutes, but the view is excellent. On the way up we even saw an eagle or two. The photo was blurry so it's not here!
