The Empire State Building
New York City > New York > United States
To get a good idea of the city's expansive reach, take a stroll up to the observation deck of the Empire State Building. There you have a panoramic view of the island of Manhattan and bordering boroughs. The world's tallest Art Deco building seems to be situated almost exactly in the middle of the island. To the north up 6th and Broadway to Central Park. Then turn towards East River and Long Island. To the south the financial district and Lower Manhattan, and across the river to Brooklyn. Westward is Union City and Hoboken. All around, myriad buildings are crammed into every available square foot.
It takes awhile to get through the long line to get tickets, go up in the elevator and generally get around the building, but it's certainly worth the wait. We got there late afternoon and the sun was setting over Jersey, bathing the city in that warm glow before the cool colors of night settle in.
